Hernández & Cía. announces the addition of Margarett Matos as Energy partner and Italo Carrano as Arbitration partner, both joining from Rodrigo, as part of the firm’s ongoing growth and strengthening strategy.
These moves follow other recent lateral hires and internal partner promotions and reflect a medium- and long-term strategy focused on strengthening the firm’s core practice areas and expanding its ability to advise on complex investments, projects and transactions.
“These new partners, together with those who have joined us in recent months and our internal partner promotions, are part of a strategy we have been pursuing for several years, with a medium- and long-term vision and the goal of building the best law firm possible in Peru. We have consistently strengthened our capabilities while promoting increasingly integrated work across our different practices. Margarett and Italo’s arrival represents another step in that direction,” said Juan Luis Hernández, managing partner of Hernández & Cía.
Margarett Matos joins directly from Rodrigo and has extensive experience in energy regulation, particularly in the power sector, as well as in infrastructure projects and public utilities. She previously worked as an associate at Quiñones Alayza Abogados and as a lawyer at Peru’s Committee for the Economic Operation of the National Interconnected System (COES).
Matos is recognised by Chambers and Partners in Energy & Natural Resources: Power. She holds a law degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and an LL.M. in Energy and Clean Technology Law from the University of California, Berkeley, where she studied as a Fulbright Scholar.
“I am beginning this new chapter with great enthusiasm at a time when Peru’s power sector is undergoing a significant transformation that is strategic to the country’s competitiveness and sustainable development. The energy transition and the effects of climate change are creating new investment opportunities in generation, transmission, storage and energy solutions to meet electricity-intensive demand from sectors such as large-scale mining and, increasingly, data centers.
I am excited to lead, together with the Hernández & Cía. team, the development of an Energy practice prepared to support this transformation and advise our clients on their transactions, projects and disputes, bringing a strategic, specialised and results-oriented perspective. I am grateful to Hernández & Cía. for its trust and to everyone who has supported me throughout my professional career,” said Margarett Matos.
Italo Carrano spent ten years of his career at Rodrigo, the last eight as a partner. His practice focuses on domestic and international arbitration, with experience in disputes involving investments, corporate conflicts, projects, infrastructure and construction, as well as the energy and mining sectors. He was previously a partner at Payet Rey Cauvi Pérez and a foreign associate at Davis Polk and Fulbright & Jaworski, now Norton Rose Fulbright.
Carrano is recognised by Chambers and Partners in Dispute Resolution: Arbitration. He holds a law degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from New York University School of Law (NYU).
“I am very excited about this move. Hernández & Cía. has an unusual combination: contagious energy, a team that genuinely works together and a client base that places enormous trust in the firm. What particularly motivates me is the opportunity to work on complex disputes, where rigour, strategy and a broad perspective can make the difference.
A great football coach often says that ‘talent makes you stand out, but the team makes you win’. That is precisely the vision I see at Hernández & Cía., and it is in that spirit that I take on this new challenge, eager to contribute and continue growing together with the team,” said Italo Carrano.
With these moves, Hernández & Cía. continues to develop a multidisciplinary platform capable of advising clients from the structuring and execution of their investments and projects through to the resolution of disputes that may arise during their development.
The appointments strengthen the firm’s capabilities in Energy, Projects and Dispute Resolution (Arbitration).
